To address food issues in the Puno region, Heifer Peru, the National University of the Altiplano, the regional government of Puno, local governments, farm organizations and NGOs working in the Altiplano organized a forum for dialogue, reflection and sharing of experiences based on the proposal on food sovereignty that emerged in 2006 from CORESA-Puno. The major contributions came from the documents, “The Problem of Food and Nutritional Security in the Puno Region” and the “Regional Strategy for Food Security, ERSA Puno, 2006-2015,” which provided input for evaluation and the design of plans related to diet and public policies on biodiversity and food sovereignty to introduce sustainability into the fight for well-being and justice in the region sustainable.
The event drew more than 300 participants, including local producers, organizations, development institutions, schools, public agencies and members of civil society, as well as experts on biodiversity and food sovereignty. Participants designed proposals and made significant commitments related to the strategic plan and regional policies. One key proposal addressed the technical issue of creating local knowledge, while another revolved around a regional policy proposal for food sovereignty as an alternative to the current global model, which creates food dependence.
