1. As part of the Pasco Umbrella Project and in coordination with the Regional Federation of Native and Small Farm Communities of Pasco, the District Government of Yanacancha, the Regional Agriculture Office, Daniel Alcides Carrión National University and the regional government of Pasco, the First Macro-Regional Encounter of Original Peoples and Communities for Food Sovereignty and Defense of Our Rights was held June 20-22 in the city of Cerro de Pasco, with representatives of small farm communities from the regions of Huancavelica, Junín, Ucayali, Ayacucho, the provinces of Lima and Pasco.
Participants also included representatives of grassroots organizations and youth and student groups in the Pasco region. The participants participated actively in discussions about current events, including legislation affecting small farm communities, mining, the Free Trade Agreement, community organization, food sovereignty and the environment.
The goals of the event were:
- To build capacity and recover our plurinational cultural identity as original peoples and communities and grassroots organizations of the Pasco region.
- To launch a regional agrarian development plan and agenda for Indigenous and small farm Communities.
- To engage in political advocacy and establish strategic partnerships with other sectors to protect and defend the rights of small farm communities.
